The 63rd annual Tony nominations were announced this morning in New York, and “Billy Elliot: The Musical” received the most nods with 15, followed by the intimate musical “Next to Normal,” which received 11.
In the drama category, Yasmina Reza’s “The God of Carnage” received six nominations and Moises Kaufman’s “33 Variations” walked away with five nods, including one for actress Jane Fonda.
The big underdog story this morning was the five nominations scored by “Rock of Ages,” a hair-metal jukebox musical that proved to be an unexpected critical and audience favorite. The show began its life in a Hollywood club before moving to Broadway.

New York, April 27, 2009—Nominations for the 54th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced this morning at the New York Friars Club by Faith Prince and Jim Dale, multi-award winning stage stars. They were joined for the announcement by William Wolf, Drama Desk President, Barbara Siegel, Chairperson of the Drama Desk Nominating Committee, Robert R. Blume, Executive Producer of the Drama Desk Awards ceremony, and Randie Levine-Miller, Director of Special Events for the Drama Desk.
Sugarland leads the nominee field with six, while Brad Paisley and Taylor Swift scored four nominations each. The first round of voting runs from April 13 through May 11, only at cmt.com, where fans will select from the top nominees in each category. On Tuesday, May 19, CMT will announce the four finalists in each of the categories, except Video of the Year. Fans can then vote online at cmt.com through June 15 to determine the winners of the 2009 CMT Music Awards. The final nominees for Video of the Year will be announced at the beginning of the 2009 CMT Music Awards telecast, June 17, on CMT.
