As I reached into the box of Christmas Candles Past I wasn’t sure what atrocity I would randomly choose. Little to my surprise, it was hideous. You see, I’ve never had an affinity for candles for they always reminded me of horror movie rituals and hurricanes when the power goes out – both disturbing in my opinion.
This particular candle was enclosed in something that resembled an old mayonaise jar cut in half with a wide ribbon surrounding it, painted with little candy corns all over it. One could tell it had been utilized quite a bit by the blackened glass and the fact that the wax and wick had melted almost down to the bottom of the jar. It took me several times to light the wick since everytime I lit the match the flame crawled up the stick to burn my thumb. That would explain the myriad of blackened matchsticks strewn across the bottom of the jar like old corn stalks burnt to the ground. Now my mind takes me to that movie “Children of the Corn” and I’m creeped out, but I let the flame flicker for awhile. It gives off such powerful heat when putting your hand over the jar, but the flame is pathetically almost absent when looking outside in due to the charring and blackened glass.
While the physical presence of the candle may not be appealing, one can not say the same thing about the smell. It is heavenly; a mixture of vanilla and butterscotch fills the air as if one were in a candy corn factory. Just when I was actually enjoying this candle, the flame began to slowly die down until it drowned under it’s own molten production. Death by candy corn.
