Second Wave of 2010 Teen Choice Awards Nominees in TV
3 comment(s)June 29, 2010 03:37:07 GMT
Underdogs in the first wave, ‘Modern Family’, ‘Community’ and ‘One Tree Hill‘ would not let the prizes easily go to ‘Gossip Girl‘, ‘Glee’ and ‘Vampire Diaries’ with the newly-announced nominations.
More TV shows will get to go home with surfboards. The 2010 Teen Choice Awardshas announced the second batch of nominees whose winners are determined by fans votes. Not dominant in the first wave, “Modern Family”, “Community” and “One Tree Hill” will now give a tough competition.
“Modern” which has been nominated in TV Show Comedy the last time, is now vying also the prizes of Breakout Show, Female Breakout Star, and Male Breakout Star. “Community” meanwhile, earns its first nominations through Spanish teacher Ken Jeong who is up for Male Breakout Star and the first season which is up for Breakout Show. “Hill” is now put under three additional categories, Female Scene Stealer, Male Scene Stealer, and Parental Unit.
However, “Glee” remains the one having the biggest chance to bring home the trophies. The FOX show previously nabbed five nominations, one less than that earned by “Gossip Girl”. This time it gets a whooping seven more. Most of the cast like Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron and Kevin McHale are pocketing one each.
The voting is opened at TeenChoiceAwards.com, including also the second wave of nominees in movie, music, and pop culture. The gala will be aired by FOX on August 9 starting at 8/7c with Katy Perry as host.

Drake, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj Lead Pack of BET Awards Nominees
By Carl Chery, BET.com staff
Drake, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj lead the pack of nominees for the 10th annual BET Awards, while the network revealed that Queen Latifah will host the momentous event.
The nominations were announced at the 230 Fifth Rooftop Garden Bar and Restaurant in New York City earlier today (May 18). Drake is nominated for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and twice for Best Collaboration for “Successful” with Trey Songz and “Forever” featuring Eminem, Lil Wayne and Kanye West. He was also nominated three times as part of Young Money.
Meanwhile, Hov is nominated in five categories, including Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Viewers’ Choice, Video of the Year and twice in the Best Collaboration category for “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys and “Run this Town” featuring Kanye West and Rihanna. Nicki Minaj picked up nods for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist in addition to three nominations with Young Money.
Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Melanie Fiona and Trey Songz received four nods, Rihanna, B.o.B, Young Money and Fabolous, three apiece while Maxwell, Sade, Kanye West and Monica received two. Usher, Chris Brown, Raheem DeVaughn, Black Eyed Peas, Dirty Money, New Boyz, Trina, The Clipse and Mary J. Blige were also nominated.
High off the success of “Just Wright,” which took $8.5 million in its opening weekend at the box office, Latifah took to the podium to express her excitement about hosting what she called, “the best show on television.” While she wouldn’t share what she has up her sleeve, she vowed to uphold the bar set by previous hosts like Mo’Nique, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Diddy was also on hand with Dawn Richard and Kalenna of Dirty Money to introduce two new categories: Best Movie and the Young Star Award. Per Puff, the group’s “Last Train to Paris” LP was pushed back to coincide with the BET Awards. “The BET Awards are so big that I changed the date of my album to come out midnight after the BET Awards,” Diddy revealed. Puff will also be hosting the official BET Awards after party sponsored by Coca-Cola. The event will double as a countdown to Dirty Money’s album release.

American Idol Comes to Nashville; Lowers Audition Age to 15
POSTED BY TRACY MOORE ON WED, JUN 23, 2010 AT 10:30 AM
Practice your best bland, white-ass vocal stylings, because Season 10 of American Idol is headed to Nashville for the first stop on the audition trail. Saturday, July 17, the farcical talent show sets up operations at Bridgestone Arena, where wannabe major-label singers now as young as 15(!) can audition for this sweat-shop of fame.
Listen, I don’t normally go making appeals to our readers, but please, there has to be someone left in the local rock scene under 30 who’ll audition for this crazy heap of trouble for our viewing pleasure. Movement Nashville’s entire roster should be there as it is, and anyone who’s spent the last decade eschewing mainstream success? Here’s your chance to show us how it’s really done, covert-ops style. Remember, it only takes one day to change the rest of your life. Deets after the jump.
WHO: Men and women 15-28 years old as of July 17, 2010, who are eligible to work in the U.S. Some restrictions apply.
WHEN: Wednesday, July 17, 2010
WHERE: Bridgestone Arena
501 Broadway
Nashville, TN
HOW: Wristbands will be distributed from approximately 7:00 AM on Thursday, July 15 until approximately 8:00 AM on Saturday, July 17. Auditioners will not be permitted to camp out. Once auditioners obtain their wristbands, they will be asked to return to Bridgestone Arena by 5:00 AM on Saturday, July 17.

LIZZY THE LEZZY
LIZZY THE LEZZY is a dirty mouthed animated lesbian stand-up comedian created by Ruth Selwyn. Lizzy is out and proud and likes to sing and talk about lesbian issues. There are around 40 Lizzy episodes to date in her YouTube video web series. Each video has a different theme; one has no sound (for deaf people); one has almost no visuals (for blind people) and there are also episodes in French, German, Spanish and Hebrew. There’s also a song about her ex-girlfriends in which Lizzy plays her guitar and makes fun of her past lesbian relationships. Lizzy is sometimes joined by her best friend Gary the Gay and they often talk to each other about the problems they have with being homosexual, which inevitably leads to comical discussions. There is also a Lizzy the Lezzy rhyming comic book.

Well, everybody seems to be singing the blues, so we have selections from new blues CD‘s from Tom Petty, The Steve Miller Band, Bettye Lavette, and Cyndi Lauper . Other new artists on the slab are Christina Aquilera, Alicia Keys, Laurie Anderson, the ladies from Sex And The City, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Levi Kreis, Will Kimbrough, Sam Sparro, and Carrie Underwood. Then to round things out I’ve delved deep into my catalogue to dust off old stalwarts like Grace Jones, Debbie Harry, Bonnie Bramlett, Joe Cocker, Natalie Cole, Green Day, Aretha Franklin, Mick Jagger, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, and more…..

Teen heart-throb Justin Bieber lit up the MMVAs stage and took home top honours scoring three awards (the coveted UR FAVE Video, UR FAVE New Artist, and Best International Video by a Canadian). Pop-rock darlings Hedley, tied for top place, also taking home hardware (for Best Video, Pop Video of the Year, and Post-Production of the Year). Fans also weighed in more than ever before casting 513,000 votes in UR FAVE categories – an increase of 44,000 votes over last year. Encore presentations can be seen throughout the week on MuchMusic.

Being a leading man in Hollywood is no easy task. These elite few must be able to sweep any sexy co-star off their feet while also convincing audiences that they are the manliest of men. Most of these performers have always been chiseled-jawed Prom Kings, but every now and then, we get a leading man that’s a little more like your average geeky Joe.
10. Tobey Maguire
I know that Peter Parker was a wimp before he became Spider-Man, but I don’t think any of us ever looked at Tobey Maguire as the ultimate leading man before or after the release of Sam Raimi’s action blockbuster. Even though movies like Spider-Man and Ride with the Devil put him in that category, Tobey’s natural dorky demeanor has always made him a bit unique for even being up there in the first place.
It’s a no-brainer that when casting Peter Parker you need an actor with a large slice of wimp in his repertoire to play the role correctly. That’s why Maguire was a great look for the role. Why? Answer: Because Maguire and Parker are two of the biggest geeks around.
9. Gene Wilder
Easily one of the greatest comedic actors of all time, Gene Wilder somehow became a legitimate leading man back in the ‘80s with flicks like Stir Crazy and The Woman in Red. Again, I’m not knocking Gene when calling him a wimp, I’m just pointing out that he’s wasn’t your average macho male lead hitting screens during his heyday. Wilder was a class act all the way and charmed his way to the top with natural skills instead of a chiseled Brad Pitt-like jawline. If Wilder was acting today, I don’t see him even coming close to making it as big as he did in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Most audiences these days care less about talent just as long as their favorite leading man has a perfect face and bod.
8. Elijah Wood
Elijah Wood is absolutely not your average leading man. When really looking at it, it’s actually pretty amazing to believe that Elijah has been able hit the heights he has based on some of the roles he’s taken on. Even though Frodo Baggins was a reluctant hero in Lord of the Rings, he’s still a hero as far as the audience is concerned. His character in a film like 9 also seems to have this recurring theme. That’s what makes Elijah so unique as a leading man. He’s a leading man without really being a leading man. I mean the guy is 5’6” for cryin’ out loud.
7. Roger Moore
Look, Roger Moore was a damn good James Bond, but when looking back on his seven films as the legendary spy, there is no doubt that Mr. Moore is the wimpiest of them all.
First off, there is no way he would ever be able to physically beat up anyone. It’s easy to believe that Sean Connery or Daniel Craig could scrap if their lives depended on it, but based on his fight scene moves, Roger seems to have little to no natural athletic skills. Even watching Moore try to fake ski in front of a green screen for The Spy Who Loved Me is hilarious.
To me, Moore has always been funniest James Bond. His one-liners are always classic and he always has a way of pulling off the ridiculous. That’s what made him special.
6. Robert Pattinson
Do I really have to go hard on this one? Not really, y’all. Due to the fact that girls around the world unanimously adore him, almost every single male teenager on the plant probably has some kind of animosity towards Pattinson. With this said, I’m sure their first complaint about him is that he’s more of a dork than a vampire badass. I’m not talking trash on the guy, I’m just saying that it’s his soft, vulnerable character that attracts most of the female attention from crazed Twilight fans.
5. Freddie Prinze Jr.
How in the hell did this guy even get pegged as the next big thing in the first place? In starring as a stud with roles like Wing Commander and She’s All That, Freddie Prinze Jr. tried to come off like a legit leading man. Most of us were not fooled though. I find it funny that studios tried to pass this guy off as the new Tom Cruise or something. At least Tom Cruise made you think he could effortlessly get the girl while saving the world. I’m sure Freddie’s long division skills were much better than his skills as the ultimate male helping stop an unspeakable evil trying to take over the planet.
4. Seth Rogen
I love Seth Rogen to death, but he’s is the perfect anti-leading man. As far as the definition goes in a classic sense, Rogen is the polar opposite of what a leading man is supposed to be. Rogan’s not especially good looking, seems pretty out of shape, and he has more of a keg than a six-pack in the ab department. Either way, he’s still really interesting as a male lead.
Take Knocked Up for example. For being the lead in a romantic comedy that could have starred a Matthew McConaughey-like stud, Rogan made the outrageous plot seem completely realistic with his hilarious stoner attitude and adolescent one-liners. The character fit him perfectly and it wasn’t a stretch at all for him to fit right into the wimpy character. Will he be able to do the same in The Green Hornet? We sure do hope so.
3. Michael Cera
Michael Cera has single-handedly cornered the market when it comes to landing roles as the geeky/wimpy male lead. I’m guessing that any quirky coming-of-age comedies made since his success in Superbad list Michael Cera as the perfect actor to play the role that they’re looking for. He completely changed the game overnight on the big screen as well as on the Internet. Michael Cera has kinda become the 21st century version of Woody Allen. He’s hilarious, goofy lookin’, and he always gets the girl.
2. Prince
Purple Rain. What a classic. For those who have yet to view this 1984 landmark, Prince gets smacked around by his dad, tricks Apollonia into stripping off her clothes, and pumps out some the greatest pop jams ever written. For a guy that’s only 5’2″ and doesn’t really speak all that much, Prince kinda knocked this one outta the park. Although for a natural leading man in a movie, Prince Rogers Nelson was anything but normal. His extremely short stature and ridiculous femininity are the two main standouts when watching this film. I feel like this is the reason why he’s acted in so few movies. Only in the ‘80s could you make a man like Prince the hero and romantic lead of a feature film. Under the Cherry Moon, anyone?
1. Woody Allen
Over the years, in an endless string of romantic comedies, we’ve seen Woody Allen between the sheets with some the cutest female faces in Hollywood. Based on Woody’s dorky looks and zany personality, this is quite impressive. Not only is it impressive, it’s kinda unbelievable.
Allen’s endless talents in the writing and directing field helped catapult him to superstardom and somehow made him a legitimate leading man. Like most of the people on this list, I’m not making fun of Woody. It’s great when there are “normal” guys landing leading roles in movies based solely on their charisma and natural talent instead of square jaw and eight-pack abs. Seeing Woody pull chicks like Diane Keaton in a films like Annie Hall is inspiration for wimps worldwide who never thought brains would ever get them laid and/or adored by a large number of the female population.
Thanks, Woody.

Mister D: I wish I had this around about 9 years ago when I had a disagreement with a guy named Jude. Not a bad guy…just a confused one. We had what amounted to be a silly disagreement which he had turned into a 9 year McCoys vs The Hatfields type thing. I bear no ill will towards him and hold no grudge, but I keep hearing that he talks about me in hateful untrue terms which can be bad. Of course, I just have to let things like that slide because there is nothing I can do about it. People will believe what they want to believe. But it would have been nice to have had this article as a guide back then. I’ve never had trouble with anyone before or since this guy, but you never know…it could happen to you. So be prepared…..
How to Defuse an Argument
originated by:Mala, Josh W., Sarah Jacobs, Ben Rubenstein (see all)
Putting out fires
At some point, most of us have been involved in a flaming row over something or other which, in retrospect, was about something rather unimportant. So, what can we do to defuse an argument, and dial down the anger or frustration in a tense situation? Here’s how to settle things down quickly.
editSteps
1 Calm down. Breathe deeply from your diaphragm. Breathing shallowly from the chest won’t help you relax.[1] Tell yourself, in a soft voice, to “relax” or “take it easy” as you’re breathing deeply. Another thing you can do is close your eyes and visualize a setting or memory that calms you, like lying in bed, or floating in water.

If you find that you can’t calm yourself down, leave. Tell the person “I’ll be right back, I just need to relax a little, wait for me”, and go for a walk, maybe even a run. Come back as soon as you’re calm and collected.
2 Listen. Find out what the other person wants you to hear. You don’t have to agree with it. Many arguments go on unpleasantly and without progress because each side is trying to be heard but neither side is listening. By listening, you break the deadlock.
3 Confirm your understanding. Summarize your understanding of the other person’s position, by stating it in your own words, and ask if your understanding is accurate. “Let’s see if I understand you correctly. Are you saying ____?” By switching from establishing which side is right, to accurately understanding the other side, you defuse the struggle to “force a verdict”. You create an opportunity to correct misunderstanding, and if you do understand correctly, the other person now sees this.
Making an honest effort to understand shows good faith. The heat of an argument often derives from each party’s doubting that the other is acting in good faith.
4 Confirm that you have been understood. Now, ask the other person if they would be willing to summarize your position. If they can’t, or they haven’t heard it yet, ask if they would be willing to listen to what you have to say now.
Phrase your request in a way that avoids blaming or shaming the other person for misunderstanding you. You can do this by wording it so you are the one responsible for communicating your point, rather than making the other person responsible for understanding you. For example, say “I’d like to make sure that I’ve gotten my point across” rather than “I’d like to make sure you haven’t misunderstood.”
5 Identify the points where you already agree. Actually, after listening and confirming understanding, most arguments dissolve right then: there was no actual disagreement. If there is still disagreement, though, take a moment to list the main points where you already agree. For example, if it’s an argument about who should take out the trash, take a moment to see that you both already agree that you each want the house to be clean, and you each want chores distributed fairly. You would not be having an argument if there were not some underlying agreement.
If parts of what the other person has said have moved you to changed your mind, now is a good time to say so. If they have enlightened you or corrected an error of yours, thank them.
6 State the disagreement. Now that you have clarity about each other’s position and you know where you already agree, take a moment to put the point where you disagree into words. Many arguments go on fruitlessly because neither side even knows what the argument is about!
When you put the disagreement into words, either you will both agree very quickly on what the disagreement is, or you won’t. If the latter, this opens up an opportunity to hear something important that you haven’t heard yet. Or perhaps you will discover that there is no actual disagreement.
7 Consider your options. Now, what can you do to resolve the disagreement? Some often-applicable options are:
If it’s a disagreement about who should do some work (for example, taking out the trash), options are other ways to divide up jobs between you. You may find a way of allocating jobs that you both find more enjoyable. You simply have to negotiate and compromise.[2]
If it’s a disagreement about who gets to use a limited resource (for example, who gets to watch TV right now, or whether there should be quiet or loud music right now), options include: scheduling use of the resource so you both get to enjoy it, finding a way to use it that you both enjoy simultaneously, going your separate ways.
If it’s a disagreement about how to do something (for example, what color to paint the living room, how to word a sentence in an article you are collaborating on), options include: trying out both approaches and then seeing how you like them, exploring compromises that use the best of both ideas, looking for entirely different approaches, giving one person control over one part of the project and another person control over another, or simply giving in if you don’t think it’s worth fighting over.
If it’s a disagreement about whether a plan will work (for example, whether a business idea is worth investing in), some options are: exploring small ways to try out the plan to see if it’s feasible, or having the person who believes in the plan go ahead but without help from the person who doesn’t (and reaping all the rewards if the plan is successful).
If it’s a disagreement about what is true (for example, did O.J. do it, or what’s wrong with your car, or whether God exists), likely options include thinking of ways to put the proposition to a test, new facts to check out, or simply letting the disagreement go unresolved—”agree to disagree”.
An option that is often fruitful is to delay in order to let your mind work on the disagreement. Now that you have each heard the other and understand the disagreement clearly, your mind has new material to work on, and this may take some time.
8 Let go of being “right”. Wanting to be right in an argument is the surest way to keep it going. People will argue about who’s right and who’s wrong for years if they don’t decide to do something else with their energy. It’s a no-win situation. There’s an old saying: “Would you rather be right, or be happy?” Be humble.
9 Practice nonviolent communication. Empathize with the other person’s feelings and share your own, explicitly identify the underlying needs that you are each trying to fulfill, and then request what you would like the other person to do. This shifts the conversation from “who’s right and who’s wrong” or demanding that the other person back down, to getting what you each really want.
10 Apologize. If there’s anything you can possibly be sorry for, apologize for it. Even if you didn’t do anything wrong, you can apologize for the way your actions or words affected someone. Sometimes an apology is enough to disarm a person’s ego or frustration, or was what the person was looking for all along. Many times, an argument will fizzle as soon as a sincere apology is given.
11 Forgive. If there is anything the person did to upset or offend you, openly forgive them, even if they didn’t apologize. Example: “Look, I was upset that you came over without calling first, because I thought it was rude. But I trust that you weren’t trying to be rude, and maybe you just forgot to call, and I’ll assume you’ll call next time. Okay?”
12 Try to see the funny side Shift the focus to something positive. Suggest doing an activity you both enjoy together. At first, it might feel unnatural, but that’s residual anger…let it go. Cheer up and before you know it, the argument will be water under the bridge.
Tips
Avoid extreme words that suggest lack of maneuvering or paint an unjustifiable generalization. Words such as “always” or “never” are usually not true and using them can amplify the anger and cause the situation to worsen.
Some people may just want to pick fights, or engage in an argument. Recognize when this is the case, and walk away.
Don’t belittle the other person, or ridicule his or her opinion. Mockery isn’t constructive, most people will simply resort to using the same kind of verbal weapons against you!
The quickest way to end any argument is to simply agree with the other person even if you don’t. If you don’t desire any further relationship with that person, that may be fine. However, fake agreement is acting in bad faith. It’s disrespectful and plants the seeds of resentment. In a relationship, this can be seen as an avoidance tactic, especially if the issue is somehow crucial to the relationship. If you have arrived at a stalemate situation, one way to bring it to close is to say “This is how I feel about the situation right now. You can either accept it, be upset about it, or break up with me, but I am not arguing about it anymore.”
