Bloody Martha

Point Of View: Third person omniscient
Verb Tense: Past
Distance: Close

Martha sits in the little futuristic bubble called a bus stop that supposedly protects one from the elements of the blizzard surrounding it. She can barely keep her eyes open due to her cats keeping her up all night so she decides to brave the storm and queue up for the bus as it rounds the corner. As she walks to the end of the line she notices how this snow storm feels different…the wind and flakes hit her as if they were tiny white pellets being shot through her at a remarkable speed. She grimaces from the pain and tears well up in her eyes. Everyone else seems to be taking it in stride but she is in a lot of pain and grows heavier and heavier as if the snow is embedding in her clothes, skin, and bones. She tries to turn around to make it back to the bubble bus stop, but the wind pushes too hard against her keeping her stilted. As the sidewalk cracks beneath her engulfing her feet and ankles slowly, so does her forehead which begins to trickle blood down her face. At this moment, she begins to scream for help. All of a sudden she opens her eyes, realizing she’s in the middle of a nightmare and screams, “Stop!,” just as her ex-husband, John, gets off the bus. He just looks at her and bellows out in a half-joking manner, “Crazy witch!” Martha had fallen alseep at the bus stop in a blizzard. She knew her day could only get better.

What I Want To Write

What I Want To Write

Part I

I want to write humorous essays about everyday life because I want people to find the humor in the small things that happen to us all everyday.

I want to write a horror novel/screenplay because I love that genre and would like to scare people (or gross them out!)

I want to write several novels about some of the experiences I have been through that might help people in the long run.

I want to write humorous essays because I’d like to be the next David Sedaris or Erma Bombeck.

Part II

I’m going to write a children’s story about a piece of gum who travels far and wide only to find that he wants to come home to his juicy fruit pack home.

I’m going to write about being sexually harrassed in several jobs, the fight and the effect it had on me. There will be humor involved.

I’m going to write about my life as a social worker and some of the interesting people I met, the red tape, the emotional
toll, ethics, and the good feelings you get from being in the service industry.

I’m going to write about growing up gay…the positives and the negatives, the sadness and the humor of it, and why it’s so important for people to understand we need to be accepted as bona fide equal citizens.

I’m going to write a horror novel about…a gay serial killer who has no time for homophobes. Maybe a take-off on Dexter. There will be a code of honor….

I’m going to write humorous essays about everyday life that comes mostly from my own observations.

Dialogue With Dust

Dialogue With Dust

Me: Hello Dust

Dust: Hello Don, we’re surprised you’re even talking to us!

Me: Us?

Dust: Yes, us. We are thousands of particles, not a single entity! You should know better.

Me: But you talk as one person or thing…I don’t get it.

Dust: That’s because we are so small, it’s the only way you can hear us is if we talk as one voice.

Me: Frankly, I have nothing to say to you. I hate you because you make me sick.

Dust: Frankly, we could care less one way or another. It’s not personal.

Me: Sounds it!

Dust: No. We’ve been around since the dawn of time. Some people we bother, others we don’t. We just live our lives accordingly. No matter how much you try to wipe us away, we always come back. You of all people should know that.

Me: But you make me sick. Physically. I get headaches, sneezing attacks, and sinus infections because of you.

Dust: But there are others who do not. We don’t do this to you on purpose. It is what it is. Look at your friends whom we don’t bother—-Barry, Rebecca, and Max. It’s just you.

Me: I guess in some small way I understand, but you cost me a lot of money in doctor’s bills. But then I guess I wipe our lives or send you to a new living quarters, I don’t know. I’m so confused.

Dust: Mostly new living quarters. On the contrary, we don’t have feelings so it doesn’t mean much to us one way or another.

Me: Well, since you have no feelings, that makes me feel better about wiping down my desk right now. Nice talking to you.

Dust: See you soon Mister D!

Four Thing In My Room

Four Thing In My Room
by: Mister D

My Desk

At this time just looking at my desk makes me nervous because it’s so cluttered. Bills strewn here and there, some overdue I’m sure. And let’s not forget all the cables running to my laptop that connect to the printer, the scanner, the speakers, and other cables and plugs that I don’t even know what they are here for. My scanner takes up a good quarter of the desk, plus the back of desk is a line of CD’s enough to satisfy even the smallest music enthusiast. There’s also my 1040EZ form to be filled causing me anxiety just looking at it right next to my checkbook….in fact there’s too many financial things to be done for me to fill comfortable writing. Should I get bills out of the way before I begin writing? Seems like it would ease my nerves a little.

Dust

Dust…it’s everywhere! No matter how much I dust it seems it just recollects as soon as I’m through wiping things down. One could say I’m rather paranoid about it due to my poor allergies. All those infections and allergy shots mostly because of dust and pollen. What’s the use I can’t seem to get rid of it. It lays upon everything I touch in order to write…my desk, my laptop, the scanner. There’s no end in sight. Sometimes it consumes all my energy and thoughts just thinking about it. All those headaches, I just can’t think. Sometimes I feel I can’t write from thinking about it too much. Am I insane? Some would say. Maybe if I cleared more junk off my desk things would be better. Maybe I’ll try that strategy and that will relieve some of this nervousness. My fingertips feel dirty.

My Cats Feed Bowl

My cat’s feed bowl and water bowl are in my writing room because my cat’s like to be around me. I have 3 cats and they all like to be fed at different times so it’s just easier this way. One cat is a black long haired, one part siamese, and one a Sylvester looking type. None get along, so there are a lot of territorial issues. The bowls are dark navy blue with little paw prints on them all around the bowl. How cute. I love having my cats in here with me; they keep me company – two usually perch on the bed while one usually lays close to wherever I’m working at the desk. There’s something relaxing to me about having them here and the calm that comes over me. The only drawback is the food smell, but I wash it out everyday to keep the fishy smell to a minimum. Using dry food is kind of a cure all. I love cats. They are so independent and they mostly leave me to do what I have to do.

The Bed

They say you shouldn’t sleep where you work or vice versa and I think I know the reason why…I am always tempted to get back in that bed and lie down instead of doing any writing or anything remotely called work. I tell myself I will think of ideas while in bed, then I will turn on the TV or CD player for inspiration. This little game usually gets me as far as a Lifetime Movie…which I end up watching multiples of all day. But I can’t help it. The bed is queen size, foam and feather mattress with 4 comfy pillows and usually 2 warm and comfy cats calling its’ siren call to me daily. How can one resist. It’s a wonder I get any work done at all in this room…I even like the way the oak bedposts look, so dark, so firm, in contrast with the softness of the bed. Many a time I just fall asleep thinking I did the work. Then I wake up. Depressed. Oh well, maybe tomorrow will be different.

WGA unveils award nominations

WGA unveils award nominations
‘Avatar,’ ‘Hangover’ among original screenplay nods
By DAVE MCNARY

B.O. blockbusters received serious support from WGA writers, with “Avatar,” “The Hangover” and “Star Trek” all scoring nominations Monday, in two races that were heavily dominated by newcomers to the guild awards.

“Avatar” and “Hangover” joined “500 Days of Summer,” “The Hurt Locker” and “A Serious Man” in the original screenplay category. “Star Trek” faces competition in adapted category from “Crazy Heart,” “Julie & Julia,” “Precious” and “Up in the Air.”

While specialty pics have dominated the awards scene in past years, the nominations for 2009, announced Monday morning, gave only half of the 10 slots to smaller pics (“Julie & Julia” and “Up in the Air” were the only other films of the 10 to have topped $50 million in domestic grosses).

The nominations covered 15 writers, since five of the bids went to writing teams.

The Writers Guild of America will name the winners on Feb. 20 in ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York, based on voting by its 12,000 members.

James Cameron scored his second WGA nomination for “Avatar,” 12 years after copping a nod for “Titanic.”

The only other WGA awards vets in that category were Joel Coen & Ethan Coen for “A Serious Man.” The duo won the guild trophy for “No Country for Old Men” two years ago and for “Fargo” in 1997.

The other three slots were taken by newcomers to the guild awards: Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber for “500 Days of Summer,” Jon Lucas & Scott Moore for “The Hangover” and Mark Boal, for “The Hurt Locker.” Boal, who was working in his office when he received word, said, “One of the benefits of selling a script like this is that you can be gainfully employed, working on other scripts.”

WGA first-time contenders clearly held sway in the adapted category: Scott Cooper, “Crazy Heart”; Nora Ephron, “Julie & Julia”; Geoffrey Fletcher, “Precious”; Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman, “Star Trek”; and Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner for “Up in the Air.” The previous contenders were Ephron, for the 1993 “Sleepless in Seattle,” and Reitman, for “Thank You for Smoking.”

“We’re friends who started writing together 20 years ago, so to be honored by our peers for a story about friendship is an amazing gift,” Orci and Kurtzman said. “We’re wildly grateful to all the closet WGA Trekkies for their sci-fi love.”

Neustadter and Weber said, “We’re still pinching ourselves that we’re in the guild, so it’s a huge thing for us to be recognized by its members for our work.”

Cooper, who was in Minneapolis to promote “Crazy Heart,” said that the script’s themes of loss, regret and redemption likely created the traction among WGA voters but told Daily Variety that the credit should go to stars Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal. “The actors made it so seamless that it made the writing better than it actually is,” he added.

Cameron and Reitman both also landed DGA noms last week. “I’m so proud to be amongst these storytellers — the people who put pen to paper,” Reitman said.

Documentary nods went to Richard Trank for “Against the Tide,” Michael Moore for “Capitalism: A Love Story,” Mark Monroe for “The Cove,” Chris Rock & Jeff Stilson, Lance Crouther and Chuck Sklar for “Good Hair“, Robert Stone for “Earth Days,” and Bill Guttentag & Dan Sturman for “Soundtrack for a Revolution.”

Moore won the WGA’s original screenplay award in 2002 for “Bowling for Columbine.”

Only 83 screenplays — 47 in the original category, 36 in adapted — were deemed eligible by the guild this year as the WGA changed its submissions process. That’s less than half the number in recent years.

The eligible scripts also must have been written under jurisdiction of the WGA or one of five affiliate guilds. Among the screenplays ineligible for WGA awards are “District 9,” “An Education,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “In the Loop,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “The Road,” “A Single Man” and “Up.”

The WGA awards have been a pretty reliable indicator for Oscar winners. Winners of the original screenplay trophies have matched in 10 of the last 15 years, including last year when Dustin Lance Black won for “Milk”; the adapted screenplay awards have matched in 11 of the last 15 years, including Simon Beaufoy taking both for “Slumdog Millionaire” last year.

There are 382 members in the writers branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, or about 6% of the voting membership of 5,777. Oscar noms will be announced Feb. 2.

Among the contenders that were eligible but didn’t make the final cut at the WGA in the adapted category: “The Blind Side,” “Brothers,” “Coraline,” “Invictus,” “The Last Station,” “The Lovely Bones,” “Nine” and “The Soloist.” Contenders in the original category that didn’t make the nominated list included “Adventureland,” “Away We Go,” “Bright Star,” “The Messenger” and “Two Lovers.”

Spirit Awards: The Nominees
Eugene Hernandez by Eugene Hernandez (December 1, 2009)
Spirit Awards: The Nominees

The nominations for the 25th Anniversary Spirit Awards have been announced in Los Angeles. Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson welcomed attendees to the nominations this morning, touting the legacy of the awards and the early nominees, including Spike Lee, the Coen Brothers, Jim Jarmusch and others.

“We are living in the world that they created,” she said this morning, “This years nominations reflect the same criteria that were important to us back then. [They are] doing more with less.”

Lee Daniels’s “Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” and Michael Hoffman’s “The Last Station” led the nominations, each taking six including best feature film.

“I am blown away, as is the entire cast and crew of ‘Precious,’ that the film is being embraced by so many,” Lee Daniels told indieWIRE. “We are all touched, honored and extremely grateful for this very special recognition by the independent film community.”

Check out indieWIRE’s reactions to the list’s biggest surprises here.
