American Music Awards Live Sunday, November 22

Nominations for the 2009 36th American Music Awards were announced this morning in Beverly Hills, CA. The broadcast will take place at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. live on Sunday, November 22nd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC.

THE BASICS OF WHY MARRIAGE IS IMPORTANT

1. In most states, we cannot make medical decisions for our partners in case of an emergency. Hospitals are forced by state laws to go to the families who have been estranged from us for several years, who are often hostile to us. They may ignore our wishes regarding treatment of those we love. They may also legally bar us from seeing our partners in the hospital room.

2. If a heterosexual couple (one American, one from a foreign country) wish to be married, they can be. And citizenship is automatically offered to the non-American spouse. Should this happen in a gay relationship, the non-American partner can and will be ripped away once their visa expires.

3. Upon death, even a carefully drawn-up will or power of attorney can be challenged by the family of the deceased. Custody decisions can be overturned quickly by a homophobic judge, and visits to a hospital bed, funeral or even grave site may be denied to us by our partner’s family. A property purchased in life by a gay couple may quickly be seized by the family, sold off, and the surviving partner will be left with remaining mortgage payments.

4. If our partners are arrested, we may be forced to testify or provide evidence against them, which legally married couples cannot be forced to do. Visitation rights may be denied by a hostile or homophobic judge and conjugal visits (a well-established practice by heterosexual couples) are not available to gay couples.

5. In America, there is a Separation of Church and State as defined in the US Constitution. The current trend is to allow a religious institution to own a word and therefore an institution. Allowing this goes specifically against what our forefathers laid out for us.

6. Some think that Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships afford all the same rights and responsibilities as a heterosexual marriage. While there are some states which come very close to Marriage Equality, none of them offer FULL Equality under Domestic Partnerships or Civil Unions as they are currently set up.

7. Many argue that children raised in the environment of a gay marriage will not grow up normal or simply that a male and female role model. There have been many studies, including that of the American Psychological Association have concluded that there is absolutely no difference between a child raised by a gay couple and those raised by heterosexual couples. However, in the case of the gay couple, that child will grow up to discover that the state or country they live in do not recognize their family as a real family. One can assume there will be some frustration and anger upon learning that they are not protected under the law the way their friends are.

8. There are hundreds of silly arguments; everything from “They are trying to recruit more gays” to “If we legalize gay marriage, what’s to stop someone from marrying their pet Dolphin?” There is no reality in any of these arguments and those you speak to attempting to use these types of arguments, should know better and more than likely are not the people we need to focus on.

9. There are 1,138 Federal rights, benefits and responsibilities afforded to heterosexual married couples. This will not change no matter how many states allow Equal Marriage Rights. This will only change when the Federal government recognizes Equal Rights.

10. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Nick Vujicic (born December 4, 1982) is a preacher, a motivational speaker and the director of Life Without Limbs, an organization for the physically disabled. He regularly gives speeches across the world on the subject of disability and hope.

Early life

The first-born child in his devout Serbian Christian family, Nick Vujicic was born in Melbourne, Australia with the rare Tetra-amelia disorder: limbless, missing both arms at shoulder level, and legless but with two small feet, one of which has two toes. Initially, his parents were devastated. Vujicic was otherwise healthy.

Growing up

His life was filled with difficulties and hardships. One was not being able to attend a mainstream school because of his physical disability, as the law of Australia required, even though he was not mentally impaired. During his schooling, the laws were changed, and Nick was one of the first disabled students to be migrated to a mainstream school.[2] He learned to write using the two toes on his left “foot”, and a special device that slid onto his big toe to grip. He also learned to use a computer and type using the “heel and toe” method (as demonstrated in his speeches), throw tennis balls, answer the phone, shave and get himself a glass of water (also demonstrated in speeches).

Epiphany

Being bullied at his school, Nick grew extremely depressed, and by the age of eight, started contemplating suicide.[3] After begging God to grow arms and legs, Nick eventually began to realize that his accomplishments were inspirational to many, and began to thank God he was alive. A key turning point in his life was when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability. This led him to realize he wasn’t the only one with major struggles.[4] When he was seventeen, he started to give talks at his prayer group,[5] and eventually started his non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs.

Career

Nick graduated from college at the age of 21 with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning. He began his travels as a motivational speaker, focusing on the topics that today’s teenagers face. He also speaks in the corporate sector, although his aim is to become an international inspirational speaker, in both Christian and non-Christian venues. He regularly travels internationally to speak to Christian congregations, schools, and corporate meetings. He has spoken to over two million people so far, in twelve countries on four continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, and North America).[6]

By the age of 25, Nick hoped to become financially independent. He wishes to promote his words through television shows such as the The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as by writing books. His first book, planned for completion by the end of 2009, is to be called No Arms, No Legs, No Worries!.[1]

His motivational DVD, Life’s Greater Purpose, is available on the Life Without Limbs website.[7] Most of the DVD was filmed in 2005, featuring a brief documentary about his home life, and how he does regular things without limbs. The second part of the DVD was filmed at his local church in Brisbane, and was one of his first professional motivational speeches. His motivational speeches can be seen on the Premiere Speakers Bureau Website. Vujicic currently lives in California.

His secular DVD “No Arms, No Legs, No Worries” is available online through his corporate motivational speaking company “Attitude Is Altitude”.

Nick’s first worldwide television interview, featured on 20/20 (ABC) with Bob Cummings was aired on March 28, 2008.
