The 63rd annual Tony nominations were announced this morning in New York, and “Billy Elliot: The Musical” received the most nods with 15, followed by the intimate musical “Next to Normal,” which received 11.
In the drama category, Yasmina Reza’s “The God of Carnage” received six nominations and Moises Kaufman’s “33 Variations” walked away with five nods, including one for actress Jane Fonda.
The big underdog story this morning was the five nominations scored by “Rock of Ages,” a hair-metal jukebox musical that proved to be an unexpected critical and audience favorite. The show began its life in a Hollywood club before moving to Broadway.
Among the snubs this year were “9 to 5: The Musical,” which failed to earn a nomination in the best musical category, as well a critically lauded revival of Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” starring Kristin Scott Thomas, which received no nominations.
The Tony Awards will air at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 7, on CBS.
